Abstract

The objective of the scientific article was to investigate the different types of bioplastic packaging and their physical and chemical properties, to evaluate the performance of bioplastic packaging in terms of resistance, barrier and shelf life and to identify the sustainable applications of bioplastic packaging in different industries and its impact on the reduction of plastic waste. This research was conducted using bibliographic searches of scientific articles, according to a systematic literature review methodology, considering Scopus and Scielo databases and as a tactic, search equations. The results collected through the methods used show that 31 varied articles were collected according to the database and from different languages used for the collection of information, in which the types of bioplastic packaging, their performance and applications were evidenced. It is concluded that bioplastic packaging, made mainly from corn, potato and sugarcane starch, shows promise as a solution to address the environmental problems associated with conventional plastics. Although they exhibit variations in strength and properties, they are generally durable and tough. Their potential application in various industries, such as food, cosmetics, textiles, beverages and agriculture, offers an important avenue for reducing plastic waste. The mass adoption of these containers is seen as an essential step in moving towards sustainable practices, reducing dependence on petroleum-based plastics and promoting a more environmentally friendly future.
