Impact of Total Productive Maintenance on OEE in a Dairy Packaging Line

Resumen

The present study evaluates the influence of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) on Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) in the 946 ml Edge packaging line of Laive S.A., Lima, during 2024. The main objective is to identify and mitigate operational issues such as equipment failures, startup delays, and unplanned downtime—factors that limit production efficiency. With a non-experimental research design, employing a quantitative, descriptive, and longitudinal approach, this project utilizes historical records and corporate digital tools to measure the initial OEE state. The data collected is compared with the results obtained after the TPM implementation, addressing three key dimensions: availability, performance, and quality. The strategies include technical training in autonomous maintenance, preventive activity planning, and the deployment of incremental improvements through methodologies such as root cause analysis. The results show an increase in OEE from 49% to 56.4%, exceeding the initial target of 55%. A significant reduction in unplanned downtime was achieved, decreasing from 666 annual hours to monthly values between 32 and 68 hours. Performance demonstrated an improvement in operational stability, reaching 99.7%, while quality increased from 99.5% to 99.8%, reducing non-conforming product rejections and waste. It is concluded that TPM implementation not only enhances operational efficiency but also contributes to sustainability by extending equipment lifespan, optimizing resource utilization, and aligning operations with international standards such as ISO 55000. Additionally, it highlights the importance of engagement at all organizational levels in maintenance management and the adoption of continuous improvement practices as key pillars for competitiveness in the industry.
