Abstract

This project proposes a smart, portable traffic light system based on IoT technology to optimize vehicle flow in construction zones in Arequipa, Peru. Traditional manual traffic control methods, such as "Stop" and "Go" signs, are inefficient and lead to congestion, delays, and safety risks. The proposed solution consists of two wirelessly synchronized portable traffic lights equipped with computer vision cameras (Raspberry Pi + OpenCV) for real-time traffic analysis. Each unit features a mobile wheeled structure, vibration and gyroscope sensors for anti-vandalism detection, and LoRa modules for long-range communication. The system is powered by four 100W solar panels and rechargeable batteries, ensuring 48 hours of autonomous operation. A mobile app allows remote monitoring and manual control. Field surveys revealed that 60% of drivers experience high stress due to construction-related traffic, with 93% reporting significant delays. The system is projected to reduce wait times by 20%, addressing inefficiencies in current methods. Cost analysis shows comparable expenses to hiring flaggers (10,130 vs. 9,600 Peruvian soles for 4 months), but with long-term savings due to reusability and automation. The solution is technically viable, socially accepted, and scalable to other regions with similar challenges.
